The Village Halloween Parade is Saturday, October 31. Leave the car home.

Sixth Avenue, King Street to West 15th, 7 pm until about 11. Costumes welcome. Cars, not so much.

Picture two million people on one avenue, a giant puppet floating past the corner, and 80,000 costumes marching up Sixth Avenue. That's Saturday, October 31st, the 53rd Village Halloween Parade. It's free, it's public, and it happens rain or shine.

What it is

It started in 1973, when Greenwich Village mask maker and puppeteer Ralph Lee walked his kids and their friends from house to house around the neighborhood. Today the parade calls itself the largest celebration of its kind in the world. It's known for its giant puppets, and anyone in costume can join the march.

When and where

The parade starts at 7 PM and wraps around 11. It runs straight up Sixth Avenue, from King Street to West 15th, and you can watch from either side of the avenue. NY1 carries it live from 8 to 9:30 PM if you'd rather watch from the couch.

What to expect

Crowds, and lots of them. The parade's site says the busiest stretch is between Bleecker and 14th Street, so get there early or find a place farther along the route. Coming with a group? Pick a meeting place away from the line-up and walk over together. Buses on Sixth Avenue are rerouted from just after 6 PM until the parade ends.

Why go

This isn't a parade you just stand and watch. You can be part of it. Put on a costume and you're in the parade. Even from the curb, it's the one night a year Sixth Avenue belongs to everyone's imagination.

Getting around that night

The parade's own first tip is "Don't bring your car to the Parade!" We agree. If you do end up parking nearby, the part that catches people is street cleaning and the posted parking rules on the blocks around Sixth Avenue. The sign on the pole still counts, and a great costume doesn't cancel street cleaning.

Coordn8 is for that part. We'd rather you hear the rules from us than from the windshield. Drop a pin and see what the signs on that block allow. With membership, you can get a reminder when we open.
